MOUNTAIN BIKE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT TRAINING COURSES

The Summit Bechtel Reserve in cooperation with the Bike Instructor Certification Program has developed training to support councils who operate or desire to operate mountain bike programs at their local camps.

Mountain biking can be an exciting addition to any camp program…but it can also present a host of risks and added costs. These two training opportunities will help you take the guess work out of MTB programming and give you the tools to develop, operate, and maintain an exciting, safe mountain bike program.

The first course offering focuses on vital strategies for successful mountain bike programs, including:

· Program design

· Facility construction and maintenance

· Equipment selection

· Fleet management

· Program hazard analysis and risk management strategies

This course is suited to mountain bike program operators, camp directors, program directors, and others who develop and oversee program delivery.

BSA MTB PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

The second course offering focuses on preparing the MTB staff member to deliver quality instruction to youth participants. Through the ICP Level 1 Instructor certification, participants learn to teach fundamental mountain biking skills and manage guided mountain bike tours. (For more information about the Certification, see http://imbaicp.com/).

This course is especially pertinent to staff or volunteers who deliver bike programs or who will train your local council camp staff in coaching techniques.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

The lead instructor for these courses is ICP Instructor Trainer and SBR Wheeled Sports Program Manager, Phil Waidner. Combining his interests in outdoor education and mountain biking, Phil developed MTB programs for a variety of summer camps and outdoor education programs across the country. He then spent time guiding a variety of mountain sports trips in Yangshuo, China and lived in La Paz, Bolivia guiding downhill mountain bike adventures. Phil currently works for the Boy Scouts of America managing MTB, BMX and skateboard programs at their newest national base, The Summit Bechtel Reserve. With a large brand new facility built specifically for action sports instruction and progression, Phil has developed a wide variety of co-ed youth programs blending traditional outdoor education philosophies with action sports like MTB, BMX and skateboarding.
