You’ve been asking for it and, in the fall of 2019, we are bringing it to you! The Summit Gauley Season is The Summit’s fall camping and activity season with a range of lodging and activity options highlighted by Gauley River Rafting. During September and October, the Gauley River is one of the top whitewater rafting destinations in the world. Our many options are designed to fit most all units.
Who can attend? (Participant Eligibility)
Summit Gauley Season is available to registered Scouts BSA, Venturers, Sea Scouts, Explorers and their leaders. It is also open to groups comprised entirely of registered adult Scouters.
Please note that certain programs have age or height/weight requirements. See details below.
The Summit Gauley Season is centered around weekends in September and mid/late October. Groups may arrive Thursday through Monday and must depart by Tuesday morning.

Weekend 3- Sep 19 – Sep 24
Weekend 4- Sep 26 – Oct 1
Weekend 5- Oct 3 – Oct 8

Lodging & Food
During the Summit Gauley Season four options are available for lodging and food. Options range from groups bringing their own tents and food (similar to any weekend camping outing) to troops bringing only their personal gear with dormitory style lodging and dining hall meals provided. Lodging and food options are selected by the group, not the individual. Groups utilizing Summit housing (Tents or Dormitory) must utilize dining hall meals. Please see the chart below for details.
A variety of activities are available located at The Summit as well as multiple options for Gauley and New River Whitewater Rafting.
The below activities are included with the lodging and food fees above. For biking and skateboarding activities if you bring your own equipment and safety equipment you can utilize the facilities when open for no additional fee. The group is responsible for adult supervision. Biking and Skateboarding Equipment can be rented for an additional fee.
Harkey X-Zone Pass- $65.00 Per Person for 2 days
This option allows participants to enjoy a variety of activities that operate in an open schedule format for 2 days. Programs are available on a walk-up basis during the day and some activities will be available in the evening.
Premium Guided Onsite Activities
The following activities utilize our world class staff and facilities for exciting experiences that will get your blood pumping. Activities are scheduled by the group not the individual.
ATV – Full Day Activity $110.00 Per Person- Age Restriction- Must Be 14 Years of Age.
This is a full day activity that includes a safety course and a group trail rides. The safety course is the official ATVSI program. Participants must be at least 14 years of age. Those who are 14 to 15 must weigh no more than 215 lbs.
Canopy Tours- 1.5 to 2 Hours $65.00 Per Person
A Canopy Tour is a series of zip-lines through the canopy of the trees. Participants will get a unique perspective of the gorgeous West Virginia forest in addition to an exciting trip! Participants must weigh between 50 and 250 lbs. to participate.
Mountain Biking- 1.5 to 2 Hours $45.00 Per Person
Enjoy a guided mountain biking ride which includes a skills assessment and instruction from Summit Staff during a group ride on appropriate Summit mountain bike trails. All bikes and required safety equipment are provided.
Project COPE- Full Day Activity $25.00 Per Person
Experience COPE Summit Style! Go through initiative games, a Low Ropes Course and one of The Summit’s High Ropes Courses. Participants must weigh between 50 and 250 lbs.
Climbing and Rappelling- 1.5 to 2 hrs $20.00 Per Person
This is a guided climbing and rappelling activity on one of the Summit’s artificial rock climbing walls. Participants must weigh between 50 and 250 lbs.
Shotgun Shooting- 1.5 to 2 hrs $65.00 per person
Get on target with trap shooting on the Summit’s shotgun range.
The Big Zip- 45 minutes to an hour $55.00 Per Person
A thrilling ride down our 3100 foot Big Zip. Reach speeds up to 60 miles an hour. Participants must weigh between 50 and 250 lbs. Transportation to the top of the Big Zip is included.
4 rafting options are available and involve varying degrees difficulty. Gauley Trips are particularly popular because during this time of year the Army Corps of Engineers release water from the Summersville Damn which guarantees prime water levels for an exciting and challenging trip. Full day rafting trips include lunch as part of the rafting fee even if the Lodging and Food option your group selects from above does not. For all rafting trips participants must have passed their annual BSA Swim Test as a “Swimmer.” For more on the Gauley River click here: (link to our general information stuff on Gauley.) Gauley Trips are available Friday through Monday weekends 1 through 5 and Saturday and Sunday Weekends 6 & 7.
Upper Gauley Full Day– $130.00 Per Person Lunch Included Minimum Age: 16
The Upper Gauley Trip is an exciting and aggressive trip that is consistently rated one of the best rafting trips in the world. This is the perfect trip for older Scouts BSA or Venturing Units that have been rafting before. Participants will experience class 3 to 5 rapids. Previous rafting experience is not required but the trip is a challenging experience.
Lower Gauley Full Day- $120.00 Per Person Lunch Included Minimum Age 12
The Lower Gauley has a lower age requirement but is still a thrilling and challenging experience. The section still includes class 3 to 5 rapids but not as many as the Upper Gauley Section. In addition and incredible scenery.
New River ½ Day– $75.00 Per Person No Lunch. Minimum Age 12
The New River is the main trip during the summer season but is still a great experience in the fall. Participants will experience class 3 to 5 rapids.
New River Full Day– $100.00 Per Person Lunch Included. Minimum Age 12
This option covers the same section of river but with time taken for lunch and swimming.
