NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is a 73,000-acre stretch of rugged canyon, flowing whitewater, and forested trails. From hiking to whitewater rafting, Summit’s close proximity to New River Gorge National Park puts fun recreational opportunities within reach.

Local Hiking Trails

Enjoy exploring the many serene, wooded hiking trails that weave their way through New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. It’s one of the best ways to see the area’s natural beauty! Some of the paths were old rail lines that have been converted into beautiful trails. More info and maps can be found at the New River Gorge NPS Hiking Site.

HISTORY & DRIVING TOURS

Take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about Summit’s rich history – and the historical legacy of the New River Gorge region – with a series of informational driving tours!

Local Fishing

While you’re visiting, be sure to take some time to do a little fishing in the New River Gorge. Try your luck in the big waters of the New River or explore any of the nearby feeder streams. If you’d like, you can even hire an outfitter to take you on a float fishing trip.

Local Mountain Biking Trails

West Virginia is nationally known for its challenging yet exciting mountain biking trails. Should you choose to ride, take a short stop at Thurmond to learn about the history of the area. From there, you can take a fun ride through the Cunard trails.

Golf

Golf is available in nearby Raleigh County, and there are five fantastic courses for visitors to try. Course designers have incorporated the natural beauty of Southern West Virginia, and each course offers unique scenic views.
