Keep on Target for Adventure in 2021 with
the Orion Project at the Summit Bechtel Reserve

The Summit Bechtel Reserve is throwing open its gates to any Scouts who want to experience everything the Summit has to offer from July 18 to 31. We have combined all our best programs into one adventure called the Orion Project for the 2021 season only.

The Orion Project is a seven-day overnight program that will give Scouts free reign of the Summit. The name of the game is adventure, and with so many great opportunities for BMX, skateboarding, mountain biking, zip lines, canopy tours, challenge courses, climbing, shooting sports, whitewater rafting, and fellowship with Scouts from across the nation, there’s lots to experience and choose from.  Open to all members of Scouts BSA, Venturing and Exploring.

The Summit Staff knows that many plans have changed recently and we’re excited to offer this program to help you get out and enjoy the great outdoors. We are confident that our excellent staff and world class facilities will ensure that all our participants have a once-in-a-lifetime experience during their stay at the Summit.

BONUS: Want to leave your mark in a big way? One aspect of the program will be to give participants the opportunity to take part in focus groups that will directly impact the next BSA National Jamboree! Participants will get to give their opinions and help define the future of the BSA National Jamboree.

Okay, I'm interested...Tell me more!

So, what else can you tell me?

No, units or contingents participating in the Orion Project only need to bring personal gear, the Summit provides all meals, tents and general campsite items.

We welcome and encourage groups that were planning on visiting the Summit during the Jamboree. While we will accept individual units and participants, we encourage you to speak with your local council leadership to see if it makes sense to organize a contingent.

The scope of this event is a about 2,000 to 3,000 participants a week as opposed to a 30,000 participant Jamboree. Our size, ability to distance campers and success operating in a COVID posture position us to offer this program.

It’s been a while since the decision to postpone the Jamboree was made. Since that time a committee of experienced volunteers is being recruited to review all current information and, as circumstances develop, begin to consider options for the future. PART OF THE PROCESS WILL BE TO GIVE PROJECT ORION PARTICIPANTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP DEFINE WHAT THAT FUTURE SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

While Project Orion is open to all Scouts, BSA youth, we realize than some younger Scouts may want a merit badge experience since many summer camps were closed in 2020. The Summit team will be happy to work with you to dual register your unit. With enough leaders, younger Scouts can attend a week at the Justice National Scout Camp ($420) while more experienced Scouts can participate in Orion. Each evening, they can participate in activities together. Call 304-640-5492 for more information.

If you have a squad of Scouts between 1 and 4,000 (yes, we will take provisional scouts) ready for adventure in Southern West Virginia, you can continue your planning by registering them at the following link.

We are confident that our excellent staff and world class facilities at Summit Bechtel Reservation will deliver an innovative and exciting program.  Everyone needs to get back to Scouting in the outdoors.

All of us at the Summit look forward to hearing from you as we roll out programs to serve young people in 2021 and beyond.
