Summit Bechtel Reserve Hunter
Education Certification Program


The Summit Bechtel Reserve Hunter Education Certification Program offers Scouts and Scout leaders the opportunity to earn their hunter education certification while on site and participating in any of our summer programming activities.
The program is conducted at the Joe Crafton Sportsman Complex, inside Hunter’s Hall, and is designed to be both convenient and comprehensive.
Upon successful completion, participants receive an official hunter education card, allowing them to purchase a hunting license in all 50 U.S. states, as well as Mexico, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

WEEK OF JULY 5, 2026: REGISTER FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2026 - Before you come to camp, you MUST complete an online Hunter’s Education course available at: http://www.wvdnr.gov/lenforce/education.shtm
Recommended courses are BeASafeHunter (which has a fee) or NRAHE (which is free).
Note: When completing the online course, select West Virginia as the state. This selection does not affect a participant’s ability to purchase a hunting license in their home state. - Once you complete the course, bring your certificate of completion (voucher) on your scheduled date to qualify for the “hands-on” Hunter Education Certification class and test. Take a picture on your phone as a backup.
LOCATION
The Hunter Education course will be taught on Wednesday evening at Hunter’s Hall, located in the Joe Crafton Sportsman Complex, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Once all course requirements are completed, participants will receive their Hunter Education card, commemorative patch, certificate, and additional hunting-themed memorabilia.
At the heart of the Summit Bechtel Reserve, the newly renovated Joe Crafton Sportsman’s Complex stands as a state-of-the-art interpretive center dedicated to teaching safe, responsible, and effective shooting skills—while also highlighting the essential role hunters play in conservation and wildlife stewardship.
Through the generous support of The NRA Foundation, this innovative facility features cutting-edge digital learning experiences, realistic simulations, and immersive virtual shooting galleries. Together, these tools deliver authentic, engaging instruction tailored to Scouts of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned marksmen.
